From Homer to Gutenberg: the Survival of the Classics with Dr David Butterfield | Ralston College
Ralston College Humanities MA: www.ralston.ac/humanities-ma?UA-cam&LevelsofSelf
David Butterfield is a renowned classicist and Senior Lecturer at the University of Cambridge. His work centres on the critical study and teaching of classical texts.
How did the Renaissance revival of Greek language study transform Western Europe's intellectual landscape and shape our modern understanding of the Classics?
In this talk, delivered on the island of Samos in Greece in August 2023 as part of Ralston College’s Master’s in the Humanities program, Dr David Butterfield-Senior Lecturer in Classics at the University of Cambridge-charts how Western Europe came to appreciate the language and culture of Ancient Greece as an integral part of its own civilizational inheritance. Dr Butterfield explains that large-scale technological and cultural changes in late antiquity led to a gradual loss of Greek language proficiency-and a waning interest in the pagan world-among Western European intellectual society during the Early Middle Ages. While the Scholasticism of the High Middle Ages was invigorated by the rediscovery of the Greek philosophical tradition, this encounter was mediated almost entirely through Latin translations of Arabic translations of the Greek originals. It was only in the Renaissance, when a renewed appreciation of the Hellenic world on its own terms led to a revitalization of Greek language study, that our contemporary conception of Classics was fully established. Only those ancient works that survived through to the birth of printing in the 15th century were guaranteed an existence into our modern world.

Rethinking the Last Judgment: Cosmic Symbolism & the Metaphor for Self-Discovery | @JonathanPageau

In this lecture, Jonathan Pageau presents a thoughtful examination of the Last Judgment through the lens of a late-11th-century mosaic, challenging the traditional view of it as solely an end-time event. He suggests that this imagery symbolizes an ongoing process of identity formation, where every entity acts as a judge, continually evaluating its alignment with its essence. This interpretation...

There's hostility towards white people in universities. This is one of the worst things - it's blatant racism! What a coward. Blackwood can't even say it. Ralston won't make waves at all without courage. Let's not be so civil as to be weak. This discussion is way too weak.

*All* K-12 teachers think they are all activist teachers who are supposed to be teaching activist kids? Propaganda says this is the case, but it is more likely that that is it--propaganda. There are certainly outliers, and, maybe it is more of a problem in blue states, but I'd say most teachers just want kids to know the subjects. Who develops the curriculum for the teachers?

Yes this is a very good question. I'm an American teacher now living in Thailand. I recently saw a book about racism in America here in a bookstore in Thailand. It was basically just full of anti white rhetoric. It looked like a k to 12 text and was written by a black American author. This just gives you an idea how pervasive such toxic ideas are. Who produces such things and how are books chosen as k to 12 texts? This definitely needs investigation.

I am very impressed by both the insightful lecture and the interesting Q&A. My sincerest gratitude for sharing this content for free on the internet! As an aside, I am curious about the usage of the English term "Spirit of Play" in a philosophical and religious context. Before this lecture, I only heard Jordan Peterson express the idea in some of his lectures. It strikes me as a very compelling and to my mind rather novel and hopefully fruitful idea. I also find the link with Eastern philosophy and culture very interesting. Looking forward to listening to the following lectures

Marx and Nietzsche simply put the demiurgic cancerous living death machine animal man back into his inherent "nature" and removed temporarily the civilisational noble lies of virtue, ethics and morality that underpin this fraudulent existence. They reified the deontological virtue ethical nature of this existence and its wider "nature" only in part and did not go all the "WAY". The demiurgic cancerous living death machine animal man is trained from birth to death to think of himself as having a character and able to be virtuous, ethical and moral between himself and his fellow animal man in his domesticated and socialized "society", yet once he removes this disassociation and derealization of his societal "programming", he can come to SEE the inherent "nature" of everything. This "realization/gnosis" is that is ALL blood money/bloodshed nature of it all the time, in which all of his actions are driven by nothing but darwinian competition of his biological needs, in this satanic "nasty brutish and short" state there can be no virtue, ethics or morality, its all a fraudulent pseudo-spiritual agreed upon noble lies between previous generations also patterned and programmed into this mass self-deception. Then he can begin to see all of his egoic narrative, place, position and meaning is all a fraud also as everything then is seen as one giant divine comedic mass noble lie of repeating exploitation and false buy in narratives of competing power plays in either preservation or expansion programmed in childhood domestication and socialization in which its all one continual giant Ponzi scheme from one generation to the next. You can't have virtue, ethics and morality in a continually expanding pool of blood sacrifice both fertilizing your satanic state of consumptive need of the genesis of your satanic existence AND also the future "generations" who are to be hell-born into this pool of blood slaughterfest everywhere. Can you have "goodness and beauty" from new born babies placed in the freshly exploded reactor core centres of Chernobyl and Fukushima? What happens to those babies? Its all blood, blood, blood all the way down, nothing but murder everywhere, bloodshed slaughter-fest all the time everywhere at once all endlessly bound by the consumptive need. Morality?! Ethics?! Virtue?! Fantasies, delusions of domesticated, socialized from birth "education" that is intentionally built to maintain as much ignorance of this deontological virtue ethical judgement of this "nature" for others power gaming positions legacies and dynasties in preservation or expansion. The more "depressing" this removal of the de-realization and de-personalization of the animal man in "nature" itself, the longer the socialization and domestication has been held onto generating hyper-real imitations of "truth" ignoring this fundamental baseline unchanging reality to preserve "hope" "meaning" "purpose" "joy" "contentment"...all in satanic hell. Discern accordingly.

  • @Tectenitarius

No, because all forms of "education" are ultimately driven by an idea-logy and so any form of transmission of supposed "knowledge" is always being filtered through some agenda of those who hold value in those ideas fundamentally forming the idea-logy. This always roots back to someone's egoic narrative power play preservation and expansion who in turn they themselves were programmed in their "education" reproducing and parroting the same schemas. This is precisely why Auto-didactic self-learning is the best way forward because its most authentic way without teachers, guides, guru's or pre-prepared scripts and filters or institutional programming and historical "tradition". Figure it out your-self.

"This lecture address faith and learning" 01:28 What a contradiction. Belief in a made-up deity is immature. Evolution is learning. To start with the nature of humans, start with the fact that we are an animal. We came across cooked meat at the East Africa Rift Valley. If it was not for this 24/7 lava over many millennia, we would still be a primate.

Heather McDonald really brings it, refreshing from Peterson’s metaphysics, Rationalism and enlightenment education and culture is what people mostly seek for intellectual help, especially people who watch Peterson. An Peterson really alienate people like me who really followed him for s lot of rigid science and rationale, and his focus on metaphysical principles is too personal and not appropriate for the subjects at hand. He also enables a lot of conservative and rightwing religious stuff to a situation where universities need to regain sophistication, precision and credibility.
